The former President and the Flagbearer of the opposition NDC party has made his second part of donation of Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs)and other essential medical supplies at a short presentation, to the frontline health workers at various Regional and District Hospitals and security personnel involved in the fight against COVID-19.
According to the Mr Mahama it was part of the national call to support the fight against COVID-19 which he earlier responded to last Sunday when he donated a set of 100 PPEs, Hand Sanitizers, Gloves, Head Covers, Boots, Packs of Bottled Water etc to the Greater Accra (Ridge) Hospital.
At the presentation, the former President of Ghana admitted that even though demand for test kits and PPEs have outstripped demands globally he still managed as best as he could to procure some of those items in his attempt to complementing the national efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It is within that spirit that despite the shortage, we have managed to secure and procure a quantity of PPEs you see behind me here to be distributed to a number of health facilities."
Today, he presented extra 500 PPEs, Hand Sanitizers, Head Covers, Face Masks, Gloves etc bringing the number of PPEs donated so to 600, costing GHC ¢300,000. HE also revelaed that due togth plights of the healther workers who have been complaining severally about the lack of basic needs, he has made adjustments and decided to secure and procure extra 50 sets of PPEs at a cost GHC ¢90,000. This suggests that, the number of PPEs and other Medical supplies would be brought to 650 at a total cost of GHC ¢390,000.
He specifically directed that the PPEs be given to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the Korlebu Teaching Hospital and other Regional and District health facilities.
During the presentation of the medical items, the Flagbearer of the NDC also raised a number of issues including the need to expand the 37 Military Hospital and it's bed capacity, establishment of Medical Research Centre like Nugoichi in Tamale, a proper trickle-down economy that will cover the needy, insurance cover for frontline health workers and security personnel, expansion of LEAP to cover many poor homes, Tax reductions, negotiations with Telcos for possible reduction of talk and data tariffs, among others.
Mr Mahama, who has been praised greatly by the W.H.O and many African leaders for his massive investment in the health sector, expressed his profound gratitude to all and sundry who have been out there working tirelessly to end the COVID-19.
"I want to say thank you to all Health workers across the length and breadth of our country for the role they continue to play towards defending us and all our people against the COVID-19 virus".
